House sitting in Madrid

Hola! It's time to explore the capital of Spain, with its great museums, superb parks and world-class tapas. Madrid truly is a city that never sleeps. See it like a local when you try house sitting in Madrid, taking care of adorable animals while their owners are away.

By house sitting in Madrid, you'll see the very best that this city has to offer. From its spectacular royal palaces to its quirky, off-beat markets, Madrid has something for everyone. Best of all, you'll be able to walk the streets with a faithful pooch by your side or return home to an adorable kitty at the end of the day.

Looking after a dog in Madrid: more than just walkies!

Spain is a very dog-friendly country, as you'll see when you start your Madrid dog adventure. Well-behaved canines are welcome on the terraces of bars and restaurants, where they'll often be seen chilling out under the table. You can also take your dog on the Madrid metro, making it easy to get around town. Where should you head with a pup? The city centre Retiro Park has a special dog zone, where locals bring their canines to run and play. There's also the enormous Casa de Campo, a park on the outskirts of the city that is big enough to tire even the most energetic dog!

Exploring Madrid's best museums

Madrid's art museums are some of the best in the world. When you're house sitting in Madrid, don't miss the two biggest: the Prado and the Reina Sofía. In the Prado, you'll find a vast collection of European artwork, including some of Spain's most renowned painters like Velázquez and Goya. Meanwhile, the Reina Sofía has 20th-century works. The most famous piece on display here is the spectacular Guernica by Pablo Picasso, which continues to attract visitors from all over the world.

Eating out in Madrid

The hardest thing about Madrid house sitting might be getting used to the Spanish timetable! Everything happens later here: most people will eat lunch at around 2 pm, and dinner before 9 would be unthinkable. However, there are plenty of options to go out for long lunches and delectable dinners in the city. La Ideal is a recommended and inexpensive tapas haunt where you can try Madrid's most famous tapa: the bocata de calamares, a squid sandwich. Cava Baja is Madrid’s most famous tapas street, so you can eat your way along here. It’s in the La Latina neighbourhood and close to Plaza Mayor. Check out the local specialities and be sure to try the tostas, jamón and cheese, and the mouth-watering tomato salads.
