I first met Liz in 2010 when she became my manager for around 2 years when we were both middle managers for an Australian government department which processed and managed personal insolvency applications. Liz and I remained friends when she moved on to another Australian government agency, and now I also know her husband Rob. We are in regular contact and I have also stayed at their house to look after their cat. When Liz was my manager she also managed a team of around 15 front line customer service staff processing insolvency applications. The team and I thought Liz was a great manager, like me they felt that that interactions with her always lifted you up, in what was often a high pressure environment dealing with an unhappy subject area. Our manager peers and senior managers were also impressed with Liz. Although she did not come from an insolvency background it was immediately clear that she was a very experienced and respected people manager, and she also quickly grasped insolvency regulations and processes and dealt very capably with other insolvency professionals. She is a great ‘people person’ but she is not a pushover and one of the reasons the team liked and respected Liz was that she dealt firmly and fairly with any team underperformance and helped them work through challenging cases, and was genuinely interested in bringing people on and getting the best out of them. The team were devastated when Liz announced in 2012 that she was leaving to move to another government agency. Now 6 years later, some are still in touch with her directly, others give me gifts and well wishes to pass onto her when they know I am going to see her, and if she meets me from work to go out we normally have to meet around the corner from the office or we would never get away from her ‘fans’! Liz and Rob would be great pet and housesitters- their own home is lovely and as a fellow pet owner I know they dote on their cat Rusty, and they gave Snippy their previous cat a lot of love and care right up to when he died at a venerable age.
