Follow the trail through the Big Obsidian Flow and watch as the sun shimmers on the shiny field of black glass before checking out the 6,000 year old molds of ancient trees in the Lava Cast Forest. Finish with a climb up Lava Butte for spectacular views of the surrounding lava flows. 

2. High Desert Museum: This unique museum tells the story of Oregon's high desert, its people and wildlife. Step through history as you wander past recreations of fur trapper camps, Northern Paiute shelters and Oregon Trail wagons or head outside to the 1904 homestead – complete with a performer wearing 19th Century garb. A special exhibition tells the story of the Plateau Indian Nations, while outdoor habitats are home to local wildlife including otters, porcupines and a grey fox called Gert.

3. Deschutes National Forest: This sprawling woodland runs along the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains; from Mount Thielsen Wilderness in the south to Mount Jefferson Wilderness in the north. 2. Pilot Butte: Sitting 500 feet above the plain, the cinder cone of Pilot Butte was created by a (now extinct) volcano. It's one of the best places in Bend for scenic views.
