Live in Tasmania’s capital with a pooch, and planning a day out around the city? Explore our ultimate city guide to dog-friendly Hobart, where you’ll find a list of dog-friendly cafes, restaurants, pet shops, walks and things to do with a canine companion.

And if you’re welcoming a Hobart pet sitter (or you’re house sitting in Hobart yourself), be sure to share (or follow!) this guide to the city, so that your four-pawed pal never gets left at home.

Dog beaches, Hobart

Dog lovers will agree that nothing quite beats getting a breath of sea air with your furry companion running free alongside. Take a look below for a list of the dog-friendly beaches Hobart has to offer, and remember to always double check beach rules before entering.

Short Beach

Head to Battery Point to find Short Beach, where dogs are allowed off-leash. And not to worry if you’ve forgotten poop bags - find a dispenser near the toilets.

Location: Battery Point, Tasmania, Australia

Nutgrove Beach

Sandy Bay is home to a few dog-friendly beaches that are perfect for walkies with your canine pal and popular amongst dog owners. Be sure to check the time you’re visiting, as there are restrictions - dogs must be kept on a leash between 10am and 6pm during daylight saving time.

Location: Nutgrove Ave, Sandy Bay TAS 7005, Australia

Howrah Beach

Just a 13-minute drive from central Hobart, Howrah Beach is a popular dog walking area for local pet parents and is known for its views of Mt. Wellington. Again, stay up to date with beach restrictions - Clarence City Council advises that dogs are not allowed on Howrah Beach between 10am and 6pm from 1st December to 1st March. Outside of those times, dogs are allowed to explore off-leash if they’re under control.

Location: Clarence, Tasmania, Australia

Kingston Beach

At the northern end of the beach (at the entrance to Browns River), you’ll find the dog-friendly zone where pups are allowed off-leash.

Location: Tyndall Rd, Bonnet Hill TAS 7053, Australia

Windermere Beach

This spot is one of Hobart’s many dog-friendly beaches, and you can access Conneware Bay with your furry friend via the 2km walking pathway, which has an off-leash area. Follow the path’s signage to know where your dog is allowed off-leash.

Location: Hobart TAS 7000, Australia

It’s worth noting that rules and restrictions around dogs on beaches can change, so always check when planning your visit. As it stands, dogs are prohibited from Red Chapel Beach and Blinking Billy Beach.
