Holyhead to Trearddur Bay
Both ends of this route fall under the Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (and for good reason). Start at Holyhead - a major Irish Sea port - and ramble towards Trearddur Bay. It’s a small village and seaside resort on the south of Holyhead on the west coast of the Holy Island. If you’re into your history, this place is ideal. It features a small settlement of Penrhos Feilw. Plus, the island is called ‘Holy’ due to the sheer number of burial chambers, standing stones, and other religious sites.
- Estimated time to walk: 2 hours
- Distance: 5.7 miles
- Nearby parking: Holyhead Car Park
Newborough and Ynys Llanddwyn Circuit
If you’ve got a pooch under your wing with energy to burn, check out this Anglesey dog walk. It’s a whopping 10 miles so make sure you and your pup are prepped for up to four hours of walking and breath-robbing scenery. If you can handle its length, it’s a pretty easy-going walk with enough scenic variety to keep things interesting.
- Estimated time to walk: 4 hours
- Distance: 10 miles
- Nearby parking: Car Park, Niwbwrch, Llanfairpwllgwyngyll
Dog-friendly Beaumaris circuit
Calling all history buffs! Another ideal walk for non-expert ramblers, this circuit around the Anglesey area of Beaumaris is available all year round to us Sapiens AND our four-legged sidekicks. For such a short walk, you’re rewarded pretty heavily on the views front. Enjoy views of Snowdonia as well as Beaumaris Castle which dates all the way back to 1295 (it has a moat - enough said?). Apparently people began constructing it as a response to the Madog ap Llywelyn - a job which was never completed despite being worked on over the following centuries. And if that wasn’t enough Beaumaris history for you, check out Beaumaris Gaol which has Victorian punishment cells and an original tread wheel.
Or if you’re in the Beaumaris area but prefer a longer Anglesey dog walk, head down to Beaumaris beach with your pooch (just make sure it’s not peak season as unfortunately, your four-legged buddy won’t be allowed).
- Estimated time to walk: 30 mins
- Distance: 1.3 miles
- Nearby parking: Beaumaris Green Car Park
Porth llechog to Industrial Ruins
For a combination of coastal views and countryscapes, this circular walk on Anglesey island is ideal for walkers of most abilities. Start off in Bull Bay (where you’ll find parking), and follow the Anglesey coastal path down to the abandoned industrial site. Sounds a little creepy but if you’re interested in the area’s history, this will be an entertaining walk in Anglesey with your dogs. Aside from the industrial ruin site, you’ll have the chance to soak up the sea views and rolling hills of the Welsh countryside.
- Estimated time to walk: 2 hours
- Distance: 4.5 miles
- Nearby parking: Maes Parcio Ffordd Porth Llechog
Red Wharf Bay
If you’re after a shorter ramble with your four-legged friend, this trail around Red Wharf Bay will probably hit the spot as one of the more accessible dog walks in Anglesey. If you’re accompanied by an energetic pooch who loves a good run, this walk is ideal with its multiple off-lead spots, plus the trail itself is ideal if your pup is also your jogging buddy. As with many of these dog walks, Red Wharf Bay is part of the Anglesey Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so expect stunning scenes and remember to pack your camera.
- Estimated time to walk: 30 mins
- Distance: 1.5 miles
- Nearby parking: Seafront Car Park
Aberffraw
Another Anglesey beach that’s a feast for the eyes - enjoy views of the mountains across the water at Snowdonia and run freely with your pooch across this enviable sandy beach location.
- Estimated time to walk: 1 hour
- Distance: 2.3 miles
- Nearby parking: Aberffraw Dunes Car Park
Brynsiencyn circuit
On the south-eastern area of the island, find charming dog walks of Anglesey. This particular circuit starts at the car park opposite Y Groeslon, where you’ll enjoy a forest walk where your pooch can scamper and sniff to their heart’s delight before heading over the hills and along the Menai Strait (a narrow stretch of scenic tidal water). Then turn inland and climb back across the fields towards Brynsiencyn - perfect for dogs to explore and for you to soak up the views of Snowdonia.
- Nearby parking: Isle Of Anglesey County Council, Groeslon
Breakwater Country Park
Sitting on an old quarry site, Breakwater Country Park in Holyhead is an ideal dog-friendly walk in Anglesey if you love scenic views, fresh air and a touch of history (who doesn’t?). It’s a circular dog walk that ticks so many of our boxes - including a Lake (Llyn Llwynog), the dramatic, rocky coastline to blow the cobwebs away, and a cafe (Caffi’r Parc) for a well-deserved refuel. To get there, start at the A55 and drive through Holyhead. Take the A5145 then Porth-Y-Felin Road, take a right onto Beach Road, then the next right where you’ll pass a stone sign which points you towards Breakwater Country Park.

Anglesey walking FAQs
There are various dog-friendly beaches in Anglesey and the times that dogs are allowed can vary. So, wherever your walk, be sure to double check that you’re allowed to take your four-legged friends along with you.
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the house or gardens of Anglesey Abbey (with the exception of assistance dogs).
For most of the year, dogs are allowed to explore freely on Newborough Beach, but between 1st May to 30th September, dogs aren’t permitted to enter the part of the beach that runs from the main car park and to the right towards Llanwddyn island.
