Welcoming home a new furry friend is one of the best days of any new pet parent’s life, but with it comes great responsibility! You’ll be tasked with the tricky job of naming your new pooch - and of course if you've chosen a male dog, you’ll want to pick one of the top male dog names that does your new furry friend justice.

When choosing a moniker for your new pal, there’s a lot to consider: will it match their personality? Will it stand the test of time? Is it something the whole family is onboard with? Phew! We’re getting exhausted just thinking about it.

The good news is, there are so many top male dog names to choose from - literally hundreds! So, to help make your first job as a pet parent just that little bit easier, we’ve rounded up a list of the top 100 boy dog names of 2022.

From classic boy dog names (Charlie, Bailey and Cooper - we’re looking at you) to the unique dog names that’ll help your pooch stand out from the pack, we have you covered. So, let’s get into it, shall we?

How to choose the perfect name for your furry friend

Choosing the perfect male puppy name can be tough - after all, there’s so much to consider! Luckily, good male dog names are easy to come by. We’ve consulted the experts and asked for their top tips on how to choose the right dog name - and here’s what they said.

Firstly, our Dog Naming Experts (not an official title… sadly) tell us that dogs are more likely to recognise and respond to a shorter name with only two syllables - think Rover, Oscar, Cooper. They all follow this golden rule, so simplicity is key.

While many choose a name for their new boy puppy inspired by a friend or family member, the experts say it’s best to avoid this, as it can confuse your poor pooch. For the same reason, you should avoid any names that sound like command words - for example, any words that rhyme with ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘come’ or ‘heel’ are to be avoided.

Finally, they also recommend that male puppy names that begin with a hard consonant – like K, B, and P – are best, as dogs are more likely to understand and respond to them. Now we know why names like Bailey and Buddy are consistently amongst the top male dog names in the UK

Well, that’s all the logistics out of the way! So, without further ado, here are some dog names for inspiration that the whole family - furry included - will love!

"Keep my new name short and sweet, please!"

Choosing a dog name: what to consider?

What’s in a name? Quite a lot, if you ask us! No pressure, we think bestowing the right name upon your furry family members is a great honour - one that you should put some serious time and consideration into. After all, you’ll be shouting it from the rooftops (aka, the park) for many years to come!

When choosing a good boy dog name, you can look literally anywhere for inspiration - from human names to pop culture, to your favourite food, books and films. The list is endless!

That said, it’s important to consider a name that suits your new pal to a T. Consider the following: does the name you’ve picked suit your dog’s personality, appearance and temperament? While you may want to choose a name based on your favourite book character, does the name ‘Hagrid’ really suit your sweet, 4lb Chihuahua? (Actually, we think that could be quite adorable…).

"Come here, Hagrid! Good boy..."

Dog breeds can also help when it comes to naming your pooch. For example, popular Basset Hound names often make reference to their droopy faces or long, floppy ears. While for bigger dog breeds, like German Shepherds or Golden Retrievers, a strong dog name like Ace or Diesel might be more fitting.

If those are feeling a little tame for you, don’t forget you always delve into the world of weird and wonderful dog names! Pet insurance moguls LV= recently revealed their customers had named their dogs Ruby Chewsday, Monsieur Eddie and Sergio McLovin (yes, really!), amongst others.

Their customers aren’t alone in their unique pet naming habits, either! We have it on good authority that at least two TrustedHousesitters members have named their pooch Hash Brown (FYI - we think you’re both awesome).

Just like choosing which dog sitters to care for your pooch, choosing a great boy pet name is an important undertaking for any pet parent!
