Fun facts about pet vision you can learn on Through Pets’ Eyes
Humans are considered trichromats, meaning we have three kinds of cones in our eyes that allow us to see the world in shades of red, green, and blue. But the color our pets see varies greatly.

Dog vision
There’s a myth that dogs only see in black and white. However, a dog’s vision is actually comparable to the vision of roughly 9% of humans with red-green color blindness. Dogs have dichromatic vision, meaning they can see shades of blue and yellow in addition to shades of gray, but they cannot see colors such as red, orange, and green.
Cat vision
Similar to dogs, it's a common misconception that cats can only see in shades of gray. While the exact color spectrum that cats can see isn’t entirely clear, studies on cat eyesight show that they have a blurred, nearsighted, and wider field of vision. Because of this, cats rely more on detecting motion—which is where they get their “cat-like reflexes.”
Bird vision
Not only can birds see the same colors as humans, but birds can see colors that are entirely invisible and inconceivable to humans—mind-boggling! This is because birds have additional color cones in their retina that are sensitive to ultraviolet range. In addition, birds have better eyesight than humans, which is essential when flying and searching for food.
Rabbit vision
Rabbits have a particularly peculiar vision, with the world appearing grainy and even two-dimensional at close range. If you’ve ever accidentally spooked your pet rabbit when you approached them, it’s because all they could see was a fuzzy, grainy figure coming toward them! This unique vision means rabbits rely on their sharp sense of hearing and smell to familiarize themselves with the world around them.
