What are terrier mix breeds?
As the same may suggest, these pups come into existence when purebred Terriers - Jack Russell Terriers, Yorkshire Terriers, Boston Terriers to name but a few - are mixed with another breed of doggo. That can be either another Terrier breed or something more unusual like a Shih Tzu or Poodle mix. This creates a whole different range of coat colors and sizes, including categories such as scruffy Terrier mix breeds.
As there are over 25 different recognized breeds of terrier, it means there are plenty of mixed Terrier breeds pottering about. So, rather than name an infinite number of Terrier mix breeds, we’ve selected 10 particularly memorable mix breeds or Terriers you should know about.
10 memorable terrier mix breeds
1. Morkie
Crossed with a Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier, the Morkie is one of the tiniest of the small Terrier mix breeds. These pint-sized pups pack a punchy personality which is energetic and vocal while also being affectionate and fiercely loyal to their humans. Because of how quickly they form a bond with their pet parents, Morkies are easily susceptible to developing separation anxiety if not socialized properly.
2. Jackabee
If we move up to the medium-sized mixed Terrier breeds, we’ll find possibly the friendliest breed of the bunch. Jackabees are the heavenly mix of Jack Russell Terriers and Beagles. Their patch-colored coats can come in a range of browns, whites, and blacks with easy-to-maintain soft fur. Smart, happy-go-lucky, easy to train, and sturdy, the Jackabee is an excellent all-rounder family pet.
3. Shorkie
What happens when you mix a Shih Tzu with a Yorkshire Terrier? A Shrokie! These pups are all about their people - they love nothing more than being at home with their parents surrounded by their toys, comfy bedding, and plenty of cuddles. These little ones really don’t like being left alone so are very predisposed to develop separation anxiety. While not great for first-time pet parents, they’re wonderful companions for people who are very home-centric.
4. Chorkie
The Chihuahua and Yorkshire Terrier have become popular amongst celebrities over the last few years, and they all expect the same VIP treatment. While known to be temperamental around strangers and stubborn to train, they are very loveable lapdogs and companions who people who are looking for a second shadow.
5. Jack Chi or Jackhuahua
Anything mixed with a Jack Russell Terrier is going to be born absolutely adorable. Jack Chi or Jackhuahua puppies look like they’ve been delivered in a chocolate box, they are so squishy! Errr, what were we talking about… Oh yes! While they often inherit their Chihuahua genetics for bravery and sass, these pups also embrace their Jack intelligence, trainability, and playfulness. Great with kids, they will anything and everything to please their humans.
6. Whoodle
The first of our mixed-Terrier-breeds-resembling-teddy-bears category, the Wheaten Terrier and Poodle mix are incredibly soft and gentle-natured pups. Early and thorough socialization is key to helping these doggos bond with other pets and pups, but with humans, they’re very forgiving and friendly.
7. Yorkipoo
Another Yorkshire Terrier cross and Poodle mix, those popular pups! These adorable scruffs can have magnificent manes of silky hair which is hypoallergenic and non-shedding. As playful as they are cuddly, the Yorkipoo is a sweet-natured pup with a high intelligence.
8. Frenchton
As a means to tackle the breathing issues found with brachycephalic dog breeds like the Boston Terrier and French Bulldog, the Frenchton is a mixture of these two breeds. And, yes, it has all the adorable, cuddly fun of a Frenchie and Boston minus the breathing issues! Yay! They make great dogs for pretty much anyone, they’re easy to train, and have the sweetest faces.
9. Pitsky
Ever seen a Pitbull Terrier and Husky mix? Well, you should as they’re pretty paw-some. There’s often a lot of controversy around the Pitbull Terrier’s nature, however, the Pitsky has a superb reputation as a gentle giant. As one of the only large terrier mix breeds on our list, they’re a stand-out breed for their active, puppy-like nature, and love for human comfort and attention.
10. Carkie
As expected with a Cairn Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier blend, the Carkie sports the protective and energetic nature of both parents, along with their cute curiosity towards new things and ability to just love life by the minute. The Carkie can be a bit of a stubborn one to train, however, their love for humans always shines through and they make great companions for kids too.
