What are the friendliest cat breeds?

A woman cuddling an affectionate cat breed on her lap

We know, our feline friends don’t have the most affectionate rep (at least compared to their canine counterparts!). While we may have to work a little harder for their love and affection, for us (and many more cat lovers), there's nothing quite as rewarding as gaining the trust of a kitty.

We’ve rounded up ten of the friendliest cat breeds so you can fur-get second-guessing that belly rub and snuggle up next to the newest clan-member without any ‘cat-astrophes’! While it’s not all down to genetics (early life and socialisation both play a massive part in how your kitty turns out), welcoming one of the most affectionate cat breeds into your home and gaining a new best friend at the same time sounds pretty purr-fect to us!

Persian

1. Persian

As the most popular cat breed in the USA, the Persian cat has to be at the top of our list of the friendliest cat breeds. This glamorous floof will choose lazy catnaps on the sofa over activities that require too much energy, although they do have a playful streak!

Amongst the most affectionate lap cat breeds, Persians are happy reclining on a comfortable lounger or snuggling up next to their pet parents with a good book - but although they are known for being intelligent, we don’t think they’re quite able to read yet!

Maine Coon

2. Maine Coon

Described as “dog-like” by the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA), Maine Coons are both gentle giants and renowned mouse catchers, not to mention intelligent enough to be trained to respond to basic commands.

Don’t be surprised to find your Maine Coon invading your privacy though, they will follow you on trips to the bathroom (unlike most cat breeds, they love playing in water) and might even try to walk out the front door with you (although they are best kept as indoor cats). As one of the most affectionate cats, adorable little chirps called “trills” will be a satisfying accompaniment to your cuddles and strokes.

Ragdoll

3. Ragdoll

One of the most affectionate cat breeds, the Ragdoll is just as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside.

Their striking blue eyes and plush, silky coats look straight off the “catwalk” and these gorgeous kitties will be gentle and passive with other family members. They prefer chilling on the floor rather than up high, and can be taught to play fetch and even come when called!

Birman

4. Birman

One cat that will never go out of fashion, the Birman has been bred as a companion since the beginning of the 20th century. This sweet, easy-going kitty is named “the best friend you ever had” by the CFA, and will be gentle and tolerant with children and other furry friends.

They love to lend a helping paw whether you’re cleaning, cooking or merely snuggled up on the sofa choosing which film to watch.

Siamese

5. Siamese

Siameses are really “people cats” - loyal, playful, affectionate, and not to mention extremely chatty! Both affection and conversation are two-sided with a Siamese cat, and they enjoy any kind of company, be that human or furry.

If you do welcome a Siamese into your home, be sure to get an in-house cat sitter to take care of them if you’re away for long periods of time.

Exotic Shorthair

6. Exotic Shorthair

Don’t be deterred by their grumpy expressions, lap cats like the Exotic Shorthair love spending time with their favourites. All they demand from you is a bit of love and affection (and food), and they will be happy in a calm, cat-loving home.

Burmese

7. Burmese

Burmese cats love being the centre of attention and will be friendly with humans of all ages and other furry friends. They are intelligent and inquisitive and enjoy watching the world go by, whether that’s from the cosy penthouse at the top of a cat tree, a windowsill with views of the street, or snuggled into your lap!

These affectionate kitties are known to win people over whether they are cat lovers or not!

Abyssinian

8. Abyssinian

The Abyssinian is as playful as it is curious, but it can get bored if not sufficiently entertained so be sure to get an in-house cat sitter if you’re jetting off!

This friendly cat will welcome new people to their home with open paws, but don’t worry, they will still be the most loyal of companions to their pet parents too. They are easygoing and love to snuggle, making the paw-fect new best friend!

Sphynx

9. Sphynx

Sphynx cats can be a pretty divisive breed - you either love ‘em or hate ‘em. But we’re here to change your mind if it’s the latter - this hairless cat is one of the friendliest cats around (even if it’s only because they like to snuggle up next to their favourite human for warmth!). Is there anything better than being greeted by a (not so furry) feline as you walk through the front door?

Sphynx cats like being in the know about everything that’s going on at home, in fact, you may feel a little micromanaged by this kitty. They are known to be more receptive to strangers than many cat breeds (good news!) but may try to show off in order to get some attention. Sphynx cats do need more attention in the skincare department than most breeds, and they should be kept inside at all times as their lack of fur means they are especially sensitive to weather conditions.

Scottish Fold

10. Scottish Fold

Rounding off this list of the friendliest cat breeds is the kitty with the cute little fold-down ears that has captured our hearts.

These adorable little fur babies will love you just as much as you love them. They are laid-back but still sociable and playful, and the affection of their beloved humans will only result in happy purrs.

So, what is the friendliest cat breed? While it's difficult to decide the most affectionate breed of cat, we hope our top ten friendly cat breeds have given you some (cat) food for thought.

Wondering what else might be lurking in your kitty's DNA that makes them... well, them? While it's unlikely you'll be able to reunite your furry feline with their long-lost grandkitty, if you are wondering what type of cat you have, find out how cat DNA tests could be the answer to uncovering your furry feline's origins, genetic traits, and potential health problems...
