As the name suggests, the best lap dogs never miss an opportunity to hop onto the laps of doggy parents, pet sitters, and anyone else who will take them. They are generally the less energetic of the doggy bunch, preferring to while the day away snoozing on the couch rather than running around like a headless chicken (although they do have their moments). Welcoming one of the best lap dogs into your household means anytime is snuggle time, but you may have to say goodbye to personal space and learn to grit your teeth through pins and needles, as once a pup has snuggled into its favourite snoozing spot, it’s there to stay.
As we try to get to the bottom of “what is the best lap dog?”, keep in mind there are lots of snuggly breeds that we couldn’t include. While most of the lap dogs on this list are small dogs, there are plenty of gentle giants that are equally cuddly, if not quite so lap-sized. Remember that snugglability isn’t always genetic, and some lap dog breeds may be a little more aloof than their average cousins. Now, make sure you and Fido are sitting comfortably before finding out whether your pooch has made it onto our list of the best lap dogs.

The best lap dog breeds
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Eager to please, affectionate, and top-notch lap loungers, toy spaniels like the Cavalier King Charles have graced the laps of European nobility since the 14th century. According to the American Kennel Club, these easygoing, aristocratic doggies “can be upbeat athletes or shameless couch potatoes, depending on an owner's lifestyle”. Because they’re such a versatile pooch, they’re also one of the best lap dogs for seniors.
Chihuahua
While this breed loves nothing more than snoozing in the lap of its loved one, the Chihuahua won’t be shy of stepping on anyone’s toes in the process of choosing favorites. The lucky winner will be the subject of all of this little doggy’s adoration and affection. As one of the best small lap dogs around, the Chihuahua won’t turn its nose up if its living space is also a little on the small side.
Bichon Frise
These happy-go-lucky pups will put a smile on your face whether they’re trotting around like they’re the cream of the crop, or, more likely, curled up in the shape of a doughnut on your lap. These certified snugglers are happiest by your side and are therefore prone to suffering from separation anxiety, so it’s best not to leave them to their own devices for too long.
Shih Tzu
The Shih Tzu may look pretty high maintenance, but it’s actually among the best lap dogs that don’t shed. Centuries ago Shih Tzus found a place in the royal laps of Chinese emperors, but today they’re pretty easygoing about whose legs they’re warming, making them great family pets.
French Bulldog
Just one look at that smily face and cute bat ears and we’re sold - the French Bulldog has a firm place in our hearts (and laps), and is particularly popular with pet parents living in the city. The breed descended from a toy-sized English Bulldog and became popular in 19th-century Paris, where pet parents from all walks of life would flaunt their beloved canine companion.
Japanese Chin
In Japan, our four-legged friends are categorized as working “Inu” dogs, or “Chin”, meaning “a separate being”. According to the AKC, “Chin are royalty, descendants of the lap dogs of Chinese aristocracy”, which explains their regal affinity for lounging. Their silky coats require regular grooming to keep them looking like the noble doggies they are.
Brussels Griffon
Nicknamed the “Bearded Dog” for his whiskered muzzle and fancy moustache, this distinguished gentleman is almost as smart as he looks. The Griff's humble origins as a rat catcher in 19th century Brussels were quickly forgotten when Henrietta Maria, Queen of Belgium, took a liking to the breed. As the Griff rose in popularity it was able to show off its adorably soppy side - snuggling up into someone's (anyone’s) lap is what the Griff does best.
Italian Greyhound
As the smaller, lap-sized version of the Greyhound (and one of the most sophisticated toy breeds), the Italian Greyhound can certainly be a couch potato if it needs to be. Originally a symbol of status in Renaissance Italy, Italian Greyhounds have taken their place beside various royals, from Catherine the Great of Russia to Queen Victoria.
English Toy Spaniel
Not to be confused with the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, the English Toy Spaniel is not afraid to break hearts in its quest to find a favorite friend. Their chosen companion will enjoy endless amounts of affection and love from their fur baby, plus a snuggle buddy who excels in warming laps.
Boston Terrier
With the perfect combination of tuxedo-jacket-like markings and impeccable manners, the “American Gentleman” is certainly an appropriate name for the Boston Terrier. There’s no doubt about the snuggling capabilities of this doggy though, he is just as happy trotting into a neighbourhood cafe as snuggling up on the sofa to watch a movie.
Pekingese
Another doggy originally bred for the ruling classes of ancient China, legend has it that the Pekingese was created when the Buddha shrunk a lion into a smaller, dog-sized fur baby. These sophisticated doggies will take any opportunity to get up close and personal with their loved ones, and are known for forming a particularly tight bond with their favorite human. In ancient times, the Pekingese was known as the “Sleeve Dog” as it was carried around inside the huge sleeves of the imperial household, but today we think they’re much happier as lap warmers!
