Popular Goldendoodle haircuts
1. The teddy bear Goldendoodle haircut
These designer doggies already look pretty teddybear-esque, so it’s no wonder this is one of the most popular Goldendoodle haircut styles. For this Doodle cut, fur is usually clipped to 0.5-2 inches in length but the groomer can achieve a longer shaggy Goldendoodle haircut if using scissors.
The fur of the face is clipped into a round (and perfectly boopable) shape, and the paws are kept fluffy and soft. Despite being top of the list for medium Goldendoodle haircuts, this cut is pretty high on the maintenance scale and requires regular trips to the groomers as well as daily brushing.
2. The kennel cut
We put our coats into storage for the warmer summer months and it’s only fitting that our pooch pals do the same. Goldendoodle summer haircuts like the kennel cut are ideal when temperatures are rising, plus they’re easier to maintain and they still make your Goldendoodles look downright dapper.
Hair is clipped to a uniform length all over the body - about a quarter of an inch in length all over and the face and feet are neatly trimmed. It’s cheap, practical and low maintenance, making it the ideal cut for pups who spend lots of time in water or love to get down and dirty in the mud, no matter the season. Bear in mind, this Goldendoodle short haircut will remove some of your pup’s signature curls, so if you’re looking to keep those, read on!
3. The Goldendoodle puppy cut
This is one of the most popular haircuts for Goldendoodles as fur is kept long enough to look super cute but short enough to keep it manageable. There are various ideas of what a puppy cut entails, from cutting the fur so it’s 0.5-3 inches all over (similar to teddy bear Goldendoodle haircuts), to (literally) shaving years off your pooch pal by accentuating their puppy-like features.
Other professionals count your young pup’s first-ever trip to the groomers as the quintessential puppy cut, in which special care will be taken to make sure your pup is comfortable and relaxed.
4. The Goldendoodle lion cut
Looking for more exotic Goldendoodle haircut ideas? This unique cut looks straight out of safari and is sure to turn the heads of other pet parents, pooch pals and even their dog sitters. Don’t try this one at home - this cut requires only the most experienced of groomers to pull off the look: hair is kept long around the face (just like a lion’s mane), while the fur on the body, legs and base of the tail is clipped short. The pom pom of fur at the end of the tail is the cherry on top!
5. The Goldendoodle mullet haircut
Think your Goldendoodle’s a bit cool for school? Add a bit of rock and roll to their look with a mullet or mohawk cut. Opt for a kennel cut or another style of choice, but leave the hair long on top of the head and down the length of your pup’s back. Play around with the width and length of the mullet, or adorn it with a cute hair tie for extra pizzazz (and practicality!)
6. The Poodle cut
Being half Poodle, it’s only natural that this elegant cut would look great on a Goldendoodle. This chic cut is easy to maintain as the fur is cut short to prevent matting while the areas around the head, tail and legs are left long and fluffy. Sometimes the hair on the head is rounded into the shape of a stylish top knot to add an extra dash of “je ne sais quoi”.
7. The lamb cut
This cute cut makes your Goldendoodle look like, well… a spring lamb. The hair is clipped to the same length all over then blended into the longer hair on the legs. The rest of the cut is down to preference - Goldendoodle owners can choose to keep their pup’s face fluffy or trim.
8. Donut muzzle cut
Like the name implies, this Goldendoodle hairstyle is focussed on your pup’s muzzle, with a rather… interesting oval shape trimmed into the area. You’ll have to let your pup’s hair grow out to achieve this original look, and be sure to ask your dog groomer to keep the beard (the hair around the mouth) nice and short. This will help prevent bacteria build up.
9. Mohawk cut
Choose whatever you prefer for your dog’s body, legs and tail because this Goldendoodle hairstyle focuses specifically on the top of their head! As the name suggests, this comical cut keeps the middle long, fashioning a canine mohawk out of that adorable, curly fluff. This look is also perfect if you love styling your dog’s hair into a topknot - simply add a bow and you’re ready for walkies!
Types of teddy bear Goldendoodle haircuts
As one of the most popular Goldendoodle hairstyles, let’s dedicate some time looking into the teddy bear cut a bit further. You might not know this, but there are a few ways your dog groomer can go about achieving the teddy bear cut.
The first is the long style, then there’s the short ears version, short beard, and the combination. If it’s a teddy bear Goldendoodle hairstyle you’re going for, take a look below for the different versions you could request from your dog groomer.
Long style teddy bear haircut
The long style is perfect if you live in a colder location or you simply love ruffling a fluffy, curly pup. Simply ask your dog groomer to maintain the shape of the teddy bear cut, while keeping the hair slightly longer - this will give your pooch an adorably fluffy appearance. They’ll also look ever so slightly more scruffy, but in the best way possible.
Short ears teddy bear haircut
When requesting the teddy bear haircut before your professional grooming session, ask for the hair on the ends and sides of the ears to be trimmed a little shorter than usual. This is particularly useful for doggos who love nothing more than rolling in muddy puddles! And as you’ll know, keeping your dog’s ears clean is vital for preventing ear infections, so keeping their hair short around this area can make this process easier.
Short beard teddy bear haircut
If you prefer your pooch to look slightly tidier (the hair on Poodle mixes is prone to getting a little wild at times), requesting a short beard during your pup’s regular trims with a teddy bear haircut can do the trick. Plus, it’s a great way to make cleaning messy faces up - with a shorter beard, food and mud is less likely to get stuck.
Combination teddy bear haircut
And naturally, if some of these Goldendoodle hairstyles take your fancy more than others, you can mix and match different combinations to find what works for your pup and their lifestyle.
Maintaining Doodle cuts: Goldendoodle grooming
We know these Goldendoodle haircut styles are all so cute - so how do you choose?! Well, truth is, you don’t have to stick to just one. Some hairstyles are better for certain seasons (the summer cut is ideal for warmer months), and others can be mixed and matched (think, cute fuzzy teddy bear cut for the face and short, manageable kennel cut for the rest of the body).
What’s more, you don’t even have to go for an “official” cut when maintaining your Goldendoodle's barnet. Take into consideration your pup’s natural markings, the style of their fur and their features and you will end up with something totally unique to your pooch. Take note that styles like the kennel cut can be maintained at home, but anything more adventurous will require the skills of a professional groomer every 4-6 weeks.
Goldendoodle haircut FAQs
It’s best to choose a haircut based on your pup’s lifestyle and hair type, and while there are numerous cuts that will suit your pooch pal (from mini Goldendoodle haircuts to the best black Goldendoodle haircut), the most popular hairstyle is the teddy bear cut.
Yes, Goldendoodles should have their hair cut every 4-6 weeks to keep it under control as it can grow up to eight inches long if left untamed!
Despite often being described as hypoallergenic, Goldendoodles have a lot of floof which requires regular grooming. If you don’t groom your Goldendoodle, they may develop uncomfortable mats of fur which can cause skin issues and irritation.
Most pet parents take their puppy to have their first haircut at around six months old.
