The waft of pancakes toasting and sizzling is sure to get tails wagging and noses twitching, but can dogs have pancakes? Or should we be feeding our pups pooch-friendly treats and dog food only? Well if you’re a well-seasoned pet parent, you probably know that lots of the foods us humans love can be a little questionable for pups. That’s why we’re here with a few dog pancake recipes so that your pooch can enjoy Pancake Day just as much as you - minus the stomach cramps this year!
And just a quick note before we get stuck into these delicious recipes - always check with your vet before introducing new recipes to your dog’s diet, especially if they have food allergies or sensitivities. Furthermore, these treats shouldn’t replace your pup’s meals, nor should they be tucking into pancakes on the regular (the same can be said for these drool-worthy dog cookie recipes and these easy frozen dog treats). Most pups can tolerate (and will seriously appreciate) the dog-friendly ingredients in these recipes, but consumed in high volumes, and you could have grumbling bellies on your hands. So, like with any treat, share these with your pup (yes, they’re human-friendly, too) for special occasions only - bone-shaped cookie cutters at the ready!

American-style dog pancakes
After a special dog-friendly breakfast this Pancake Day? Or maybe it’s your pup’s birthday and you’re after a one-off treat for your furry best friend. Either way, look no further as we explore this all-American extravaganza of a brekky…
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 egg
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 100ml water
- 1 teaspoon dog-friendly peanut butter
- 1 teaspoon natural maple syrup (dodge artificial as it’s packed with sweeteners which are seriously unhealthy for dogs)
- Doggy bacon
Instructions:
- Mash the banana with a fork over a plate. Crack the egg into the banana and whisk until fully combined.
- Add the flour and peanut butter into the banana mixture and combine. Slowly add your water until a loose (American-style) batter is formed.
- Heat a touch of oil in a frying pan and add your batter in with a tablespoon, forming small rounds.
- Cook until they’re golden brown on both sides and serve with the maple syrup and doggy bacon.
European-style pancakes for dogs
Maybe your pooch has a taste for thinner, more crepe-like pancakes that are popular in homes across Britain and throughout Europe (if you know your pup’s preference for European vs. American pancakes, kudos to you!). Here find a dog-friendly pancake mix that can be rolled, folded and served just like a traditional crepe.
Ingredients:
- ¼ cup white flour
- 1 egg
- 100ml water
- Wedge of orange (make sure it’s a wedge of orange flesh. Don’t give orange seeds and peels to your pup)
- Sprinkle of sugar
Instructions:
- To make your European-style puppy pancakes, whisk together all the ingredients (minus the orange and sugar - these are your toppings) and beat until small bubbles form on the top.
- Heat a large frying pan on a medium heat and add a drop of oil, making sure it coats the majority of the pan.
- Holding your frying pan in one hand and your jug of batter in the other, pour enough batter into the middle of your pan, swirling the batter around the pan as you go. Your pancakes should be as thin as possible, so practice adding as little batter as you can to coat the pan.
- Once your pancake starts to come away from the pan, have a go at flipping your pancake (with your pooch well out of the way!). Make sure it’s cooked all the way through - your pancake should have small golden spots all over each side.
- Serve with a tiny squeeze of orange and a sprinkle of sugar and voila - puppy pancakes are served!
Bone-shaped dog pancake recipe
Dog-friendly pancakes can be a walk in the park - and a healthy breakfast for you, too. Replace your morning oats with these delicious oat and banana-based dog pancakes (and cut out with a bone-shaped cookie cutter if you’re treating your pup to a taste).
Ingredients:
- 2 cups oat flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- ½ cup water
- 1 ripe banana
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon cooking oil (such as coconut oil)
Topping options:
- Berries (use berries that are safe for pups e.g. blackberries. Peel them and remove the pits and seeds before including the berries!)
- Chopped apple
- Unsweetened apple sauce
- Ripe banana slices
- Your pup’s favorite biscuits
- Dog-friendly whipped cream
- Dog-friendly peanut butter
Instructions:
- Mash the banana on a plate with a fork and set aside.
- Whisk together the egg and water in a bowl and add in your banana mixture, stirring until it’s thoroughly combined.
- Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl then add in the wet ingredients, mixing well.
- Place a frying pan on a medium heat and drop in a touch of the oil.
- Once the oil is hot, add around ¼ cup of the batter for each pancake, making perfectly-sized (small) pancakes for your furry friend.
- Cook until they’re golden brown and solid all of the way through, cutting out with a bone-shaped cookie cutter and topping with ingredients your pooch will appreciate!
Grain-free pancakes for dogs
If you’re after dog breakfast for Shrove Tuesday that won’t upset their stomach, treat your pup to this (delicately-spiced) dog-friendly pancake recipe.
Ingredients:
- 1 ripe banana
- 2 eggs
- Dog-friendly peanut butter
- 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
- A pinch of cinnamon (generally speaking, no more than one-eighth of a teaspoon for every 15 pounds of your dog’s body weight)
- Berries (as mentioned above, choose berries that are safe for your dog)
Instructions:
- Mash up the banana on a plate with a fork and set aside.
- In a separate bowl, whisk your eggs, then add your cinnamon, flaxseed, peanut butter and mashed banana, mixing until fully incorporated.
- Heat a frying pan over a medium heat, adding a little cooking oil.
- Once the oil is hot, pour a quarter of the batter in at a time, cooking on both sides until golden brown. Top with berries and voila - the perfect homemade dog treat for Pancake Day!
Dogs and pancakes: FAQs
Yes, pancakes are safe for dogs in small amounts and should only be served on special occasions. Just make sure you’re not adding heaps of sugar, any sweetener or toppings that aren’t safe for dogs.
Dogs can have a small amount of natural maple syrup - steer clear of anything containing sweeteners.
Pancakes are a treat for dogs, but should never be considered a staple part of their diet - too much pancake can cause issues like weight gain and upset tummies!
