Apple head vs deer head Chihuahua - what's the difference?

Think Chihuahuas are a one-size-fits-all breed? Think again. If you haven’t heard of the terms ‘apple head’ or ‘deer head’ before, we’d forgive you for thinking them a little… peculiar. But when it comes to the apple head vs deer head Chihuahua debate, these are actually two of the best ways to categorise this adorable dog breed. 

Officially, the American Kennel Club (AKC) recognises two types of Chihuahua: the short haired and long haired Chihuahua. But, unofficially, the terms apple head and deer head reign supreme - at least amongst us Chi lovers. But what exactly sets apart a deer vs apple head Chihuahua? 

While they are still the same breed, there are some differences - namely in appearance and health. Apple head Chihuahuas

These funny named pups are as sweet as their fruity name would suggest. But what is the main difference between an apple and deer head Chihuahua? Glad you asked…

Appearance 

The main thing that sets an apple head Chihuahua apart from his deer-headed brother is - you guessed it - their head shape. Let’s take a look at some of the other key characteristics of these apple-headed cuties: 

• A rounded, apple dome skull (currently, only the apple head shape meets the AKC breed standard)
• Usually between 6 and 9 inches tall and 3-6 pounds (usually smaller than the deer head)
• Short snout that meets the forehead at a 90-degree angle
• Short jaw and neck
• Large, expressive eyes 
• Small body with short legs 
• Can be long-haired or short-haired

Health

Apple head Chihuahuas tend to encounter more health problems compared to their deer headed counterparts. Here are the main things to watch out for:

• Moleras. Moleras (a small, soft spot on the top of the head) can affect any kind of Chihuahua, but are most common in apple heads. While moleras themselves shouldn’t cause your pup any harm, they can make head injuries much more dangerous. 
• Respiratory issues. The apple head’s sharp 90-degree angled nose means that respiratory issues are more common with apple heads vs deer head. This can lead to reverse sneezing and breathing problems - they are also more likely to develop a collapsed trachea.
• Eye problems and infections. Due to their short snout, they can suffer with bulging eyes and eye infections are common. 
• Heart conditions
• Patellar luxation (loose kneecaps)

Ever heard of teacup Chihuahuas? These aren't a different breed, but instead an even smaller version of the typical Chi. 

Usually, teacups have more apple-head characteristics and because of their tiny size, these pups are prone to even more health issues. As well as the above, teacups can suffer with bone fragility, growth issues, bladder problems, cleft palates and neurological problems.

Temperament

When it comes to temperament, there’s very little that sets apart the apple head Chihuahua vs deer head Chihuahua. Yep, they are both as loyal, lovable - and feisty! - as each other. 

In general, Chihuahuas are fiercely loyal and protective of their humans - apple and deer alike. They love spending time with their pet parents and hate being left alone - which is why a dog sitter is a great pet care option for these cute little critters. They are playful and affectionate, and while some are bold and confident, others can be timid in nature (which is why socialisation from an early age is key). 

They are vocal dogs, so can be prone to barking. Both apple head and deer heads know how to get their way with their humans, so it's important to have a firm and consistent training schedule in place!

Deer head Chihuahuas

With a narrow head and ‘deer-like’ facial features, the deer headed Chi can thank their adorable little noggin for their name. Here are a few more characteristics of the deer headed Chihuahua:

Appearance

• Larger ears and a narrow, deer-like skull 
• Longer necks and extended jawline 
• Small, but slightly larger body compared to the apple head - and with longer legs
• Expressive eyes (but typically less pronounced than apple heads)
• Deer heads can weigh up to 12 pounds, and can grow to be up to 12 inches tall
• Longer nose that slopes to the forehead
• Can be either short-haired or long haired 

Health 

These little deer-headed critters can suffer many of the same health concerns as apple headed Chihuahuas, such as eye and dental problems, heart conditions and patellar luxation. That said, these tend to be less common compared to their apple-headed cousins.

Deer headed Chihuahuas can also be born with moleras, but again, this is more common in apple headed Chihuahuas.

Temperament

While some pet parents say that deer headed Chihuahuas tend to be more relaxed, there isn't much evidence to suggest that there is any difference at all in temperament between the apple head and the deer headed Chihuahua.

Both can have the typical Chihuahua traits so, whichever you have in your pack, you can be certain you'll have a loyal, lovable, and protective little critter on your hands.

And, in typical Chi fashion, they'll be somewhat feisty and with serious lashings of big-dog attitude!
