Tips for Naming your Cat
Now that you’ve had a look through all the lists and should have plenty of inspiration to help you choose a cute cat name for your new fur baby, we’d like to give you a few more general tips for naming your cat. And here they are:
- Take your time. Once your new kitten moves in, you’ll of course want it to have a pretty name as quickly as possible – but should nothing come to mind right away, don’t rush into it. Get to know your new mate and then pick a name that really fits their personality!
- Consider a two-syllable name. Cats aren’t as easy to train as their barking pet buddies but with a little love, patience, and consistency you can teach them to listen to their name and to simple commands just as well as any dog.
To make it as easy as possible for your kitten to recognize their name, choose one that’s two syllables long or that you know you’ll shorten to two syllables most of the time, as studies suggest that two-syllable names are easiest to recognise for cats (and dogs, by the way). - Don’t choose a name your cat would share with a family member or close friend to avoid confusing your cat (and the person!). If you’re trying to teach your cat simple commands, also make sure its name doesn’t rhyme with any of those.
- Pick a name with strong vowels. Studies suggest that cats pick up on the vowels in their names much more than the consonants, so try to pick a name that has at least two clearly audible vowels. If you have several cats, also make sure those vowels aren’t the same ones in the same order for two or more of them.
- Pick a name you really like and that feels right for your cat! Not only will you be using your kitty’s name multiple times a day, some recent findings also suggest that the names we give our children and pets actually influence their personality.
So, if you’d like a cat that’s a real class clown, how about giving them a funny cat name? Or if you’d like one that will rid you of any vermin in the house, how about Hunter? We won’t give any guarantees this will actually work, but it might be worth a try! - And lastly: Don’t be scared to rename kittens after adopting them. Many shelters will give their protégés cute cat names before they’re old enough to be adopted. If you love the name, awesome! But if not, don’t worry – it’s not too late at all to still change it.
In fact, this is even true for older cats. It might take a while for them to get used to their new moniker, but if you keep calling them the same name, sooner or later they will learn to react to it – especially if you help them make the association by planning for 15-min training sessions in the first few weeks, during which you reward them with a little treat every time they look at you when you call them.
