Can dogs eat peanut butter?
Yes, dogs can eat peanut butter as long as it’s free from xylitol, an artificial sweetener found in sugar-free products like toothpaste, chewing gum, cereals, and jams. Xylitol is toxic to dogs and should be kept well out of reach of prying paws, as it can cause a dramatic decrease in blood sugar levels known as hypoglycemia which can be deadly if left untreated.

What kind of peanut butter can dogs eat?
When it comes to sharing peanut butter with your dog, not all jars are created equal. Here's what you need to know about the type of peanut butter you feed your pup:
Xylitol-free
Some peanut butter contains a sugar substitute called xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. Always check the label to make sure the peanut butter you choose is free from xylitol.
Natural peanut butter
Where possible, opt for natural peanut butter which is free from added sugar, salt, and artificial ingredients. Look for butter that lists peanuts as the sole ingredient or has just a small amount of salt. That being said, the most natural peanut butter you can get is the one you make at home, and luckily for you, it’s super easy to whip up a batch. Just pop your roasted peanuts in a high-speed blender or food processor and mix until smooth.
Can dogs eat crunchy peanut butter?
It doesn’t matter whether the peanut butter is smooth or crunchy, the key is that it doesn’t contain xylitol. However, some pet parents report finding creamy peanut butter easier to work with for treats and medicine.
Can dogs eat JIF peanut butter?
Although JIF peanut butter is free from xylitol, it contains high levels of sugar, hydrogenated vegetable oils, and other additives that are not recommended for dogs.
Can dogs eat Skippy peanut butter?
Skippy peanut butter is also xylitol-free but it’s still best to stick with natural or homemade peanut butter which is free from additives and sugar.
Why can dogs eat peanut butter but not peanuts?
Dogs can safely enjoy xylitol-free peanut butter because it's processed and usually free from aflatoxins, harmful carcinogens that can be found in raw or moldy peanuts. Additionally, salted peanuts are high in sodium which can cause health problems for dogs, and the creamy texture of peanut butter makes it easier for pups to consume. Peanuts may pose a choking hazard for smaller dogs.
Is peanut butter bad for dogs?
Peanut butter is filled with protein, vitamins, and healthy fats, and can be a nutritious treat for pups who enjoy a healthy, well-rounded diet. That being said, too much of a good thing is never a good idea, so pet parents and dog sitters should remember to give their furry friends peanut butter in moderation. Despite being rich in healthy fats, too much peanut butter can lead to weight gain and isn’t suitable for dogs who are on a special diet.
Feeding your dog peanut butter
Peanut butter can be a tasty treat for four-legged friends to enjoy every once in a while. It works well in reward-based training, and spreading it inside a Kong or on a licky mat is a great way of keeping pups busy.
Can dogs eat peanut butter and jelly?
While plain peanut butter is safe for dogs, it's best to avoid peanut butter and jelly sandwiches due to the high sugar content in the jelly.
Can dogs eat peanut butter pretzels?
These treats may contain ingredients like chocolate or high levels of salt, which can be harmful to dogs. It's best to avoid sharing them with your pup.
Can dogs eat apples and celery with peanut butter?
Yes, dogs can enjoy apples and celery with a thin layer of peanut butter as a healthy and tasty snack. Just make sure you use peanut butter without xylitol in it and be sure to remove any seeds and cut them into small, manageable pieces.
Can dogs eat peanut butter with honey?
A small drizzle of honey in moderation is safe for dogs however it is unnecessary to include honey in your dog’s diet.
If your furry friend’s the peanut butter to your jelly, you’ll be pleased to know that you can now share your beloved snack with your four-pawed pal every so often. It’s important to remember that treats like this should make up no more than 10% of your dog’s daily food intake, but speaking to your vet about how much peanut butter your dog can eat will give you a more detailed picture.
