Do you know the benefits of coconut oil for dogs? No! Well, neither did we until very recently. As a popular beauty treatment or tasty ingredient for us humans, it’s becoming a favorite amongst pet parents for the same reason. So, what’s all the furry fuss about? What benefits does coconut oil have for dogs?

Let’s kick back, relax, and see what all the fuss is about coconut oil for dogs

Is coconut oil safe for dogs?

In small quantities, both coconut and coconut oil are generally safe for dogs - we say ‘generally’ because nothing is ever guaranteed. Pups can have an intolerance to almost anything so make sure you talk to their vet before trying anything new.

Do take care with how much you feed your pooch. Adding coconut oil to your dog's diet in large quantities can cause pancreatitis which is a very serious disease. If their vet is happy for you to use coconut oil on your pup, there are several benefits of coconut oil for dogs

What are the benefits of coconut oil for dogs?

Can help soothe allergic reactions

Coconut oil is a natural anti-inflammatory that can help allergic reactions on a pup’s skin and also in their digestive system. If you feed your dog coconut oil (after you’ve checked with your vet) it can help to soothe food and skin allergies. Similarly, applying coconut oil directly onto your dog’s skin can reduce swelling and irritation, only in very small amounts. Dogs have a habit of licking themselves (duh) and too much will cause them tummy pains.

Coconut oil can be great to soothe or ease symptoms, but it will not resolve the underlying allergy which will need treatment from your vet.

Helps dry skin on dogs

And humans, actually! Coconut oil is an excellent natural long-lasting moisturizer and can be incorporated into your dog’s grooming routine. Rub a small amount of coconut oil on their noses and paw pads after a bath, it’ll stop them from drying out. In winter, this can also be super helpful and healing chapped paws or sniffle snoots.

Once again, only try this after talking to your vet, they’ve said it’s fine, and you only use a small smudge.

Rich in fatty acids (medium chain triglycerides (MCTs))

Medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) are the good kinds of fat, the ones that’ll keep your dog’s tail wagging and their heart pumping. Adding coconut oil to your dog's diet can make your dog’s coat healthier and shinier, it helps to reduce their cholesterol which is excellent for their hearts.

But beware of weight gain! While there are lots of paw-sitives to coconut oil for dogs, too much can cause your pup to put on weight.

It’s a natural breath freshener

There’s bad dog breath, and then there’s bad dog breath. But, a small dab of coconut oil on their gums or in their food can help to clear away those whiffy woofs. Keep in mind that bad dog breath can be a symptom of another illness or condition so do take your pup to the vet if you’re concerned about any particularly foul smells from your dog’s mouth, or sore gums or teeth.

Best coconut oil for dogs' skin

Virgin coconut oil is always best for use on dog’s skin. Why? Well, it’s the most natural meaning it doesn’t contain many (if any) added chemicals which could cause a bad reaction with your pup. Look for coconut oil that is labeled as organic and cold-pressed, this is the good stuff!
