The thought of speaking to someone you haven’t met before can naturally seem less than appealing, especially when you’re not sure what to talk about! However, once you realise you have something in common, the conversation flows much more easily — what’s better to bond over than the four-legged friends you dote on a day-to-day?
We’ve put together 10 common things that give away a fellow pet lover; because, when pets are involved, people don’t stay strangers for long.
1. Their phone memory is full from taking so many pictures of pets
We dare you to tell us we’re wrong on this one… If you look at the camera roll on your phone you’ll probably find more photos of your furry friends than anything and anyone else. But who wouldn’t want to snap every single thing their pets do? After all, they are the cutest, sweetest and most adorable things in the world.

2. A second date is off the cards as soon as they hear someone doesn’t like pets
'Not keen on pets? It’s just not meant to be...' If your date isn’t keen on spending time with your four-legged friends, then you won’t be able to make room for that person in your agenda. Pet lovers are drawn to other animal lovers and having that in common is already a bonding factor.
On the other hand, if you dote on dogs, cats, rabbits, chinchillas or guinea pigs, it may be a match made in heaven.
3. Their clothes are often covered in fur
‘It’s not fur, they’re ‘magical fibres of love…’ Dog or cat hair everywhere is one of those things that all pet lovers have in common. As well as the fact that they don’t care anymore. Why should they? Sharing your life and home with furry friends means that every single surface of your home and every item of clothing in your wardrobe will be covered in dog hair. They’ve learnt to keep lint rollers handy and to ignore the odd pet hair here and there.
4. They have expert knowledge of vacuum cleaners
'If it can’t hoover up pet hair well, it’s no good...' Yes, a vacuum cleaner is their favorite home appliance and they’re absolute experts in picking the right one for the job.
5. They have a new nickname for their pet every week
Yes, their pets have names, in plural. If they share a home with Peter the dog, they’ll also call him Petey, Petester, Petey-pup or Pedro, depending on the day of the week and time of the day. Now, how many nicknames do your pets have?
6. You’ll often spot them leaving an event early to go and spend time with their pet
Because we all know there’s nothing better in this world than snuggling on the couch with your four-legged furry friends. It’s so comfy, so warm and so perfect that it’s no wonder they’d swap a party for a cosy night in.
7. They manage to learn people’s pet’s name before their partner’s…
Much easier to remember when there’s a wet nose involved!
8. They follow more animals on social media than they do people
The pets of Instagram are certainly a lot of fun and inspiration. Nothing like following the cycling adventures of Nala the cat around the world or being inspired by Loki the Wolfdog in the great outdoors to feel better about the world.
9. They speak to and about their pet as if they are a human…
Just because they don’t walk on two legs and can’t speak with words, doesn’t mean they are not people. No matter their breed, pets are family and they are treated like another person. With exactly the same degree of love and care, like they rightly deserve.
10. Some even house sit just to spend time with pets…
It’s the perfect solution for those who aren’t lucky enough to have pets of their own
Once you keep your eye out for these signs, you’ll be spotting fellow pet lovers in no time! And once you’ve experienced the magical moment when you realise someone is a fellow pet lover just like you, you know you won’t stay strangers for long.
