Do cats know their names?
Cats are renowned for their indifference when it comes to their humans. All owners will testify as to how readily our cats ignore us when you call their name. But do cats know their names? A Japanese study claims yes, they do recognise their own names — even if they pretend not to hear you.
Behavioural scientist, Atsuko Saito’s study involved testing seventy-eight cats from different Japanese households. The aim of the game? To find out if the cats responded to their names. Saito and her colleagues had the cat’s owners repeatedly say four words that sounded similar to their cats’ names until the cats acclimated to those words and stopped responding. The owners then said their cats' actual names, and the researchers looked at whether the cats were able to tell the difference between the two.
What were the results? The cats had more pronounced responses to their own names — meowing or moving their ears, heads or tails — than to similar words or other cats’ names.
The study clearly shows that many cats react to their own names when spoken by their owners. Biologist John Bradshaw says he is less convinced cats can recognize their names when spoken by someone unfamiliar. So next time you’re calling your beloved feline and they ignore you, rest assured they are actually listening.
