The capital city of the Netherlands has delighted visitors for hundreds of years. Amsterdam is known for its beautiful canals, old-fashioned elegance and incredible artwork. Its narrow streets hide a wealth of secrets. What will you discover when you go house sitting in Amsterdam?
House sitting in Amsterdam is a great way to get to know this Dutch city. Unlike a tourist, you'll be staying in a real home, looking after cute pets while you explore the streets and canals of the city. Put on your clogs and get ready for an unforgettable adventure, as you discover one of Europe's most vibrant and lively capitals!
Taking care of a dog in Amsterdam is an amazing experience for animal lovers. That's because the Dutch are incredibly friendly to canines. Your new four-legged friend will be welcome almost everywhere you go. Only a few special places, like churches and museums, turn dogs away. You'll find that dogs are welcome in restaurants, from casual cafes to traditional eateries. Public transport is also dog-friendly, and no one will bat an eyelid at the sight of your pooch on the metro or tram! You'll even see small dogs riding in the baskets of the city's thousands of bicycles. For off-leash adventures, head to the city's great parks, like Oosterpark, Vondelpark or Sarphatipark.
When you're in a country with such incredible artistic heritage, it would be plain rude to ignore the museums! The Rijksmuseum is the most famous museum in town, with masterpieces by artists like Rembrandt and Vermeer. Nearby, you'll also find the Van Gogh Museum, which displays works by the most famous Dutch painter in history. This is one of the most visited art museums in the world, so don't be surprised if there are big queues. When house sitting in Amsterdam, take the opportunity to visit these galleries and immerse yourself in Dutch art! You can also visit Rembrandt's former home and studio, which has now been transformed into a museum dedicated to the great master.
Like any European capital, Amsterdam has a long, rich history. Discover it for yourself as part of your Amsterdam house sitting adventure! Start in Dam Square, the centre of the city, with many buildings of historical interest. Visit the Oude Church, the oldest building in the city, dating back to 1213. Another fascinating historical site is the Bloemenmarkt, the world's only floating flower market, on the southern side of the canals. For many visitors, the most interesting piece of history in Amsterdam is also the most heartbreaking: the Anne Frank House. This nondescript home is where the teenage diarist and her family hid from the Nazis. Preserved as it was in the Second World War, this house is now a museum that tells Anne's tragic story.
